For the first time in the country, physalis fruit has been grown successfully in Bandar Deyr County in Bushehr Province, said Isa Mohammad-Doust, head of the county’s Agriculture Jihad.  “We have planned to grow the fruit in bulk in greenhouses across the county using scientific methods,” Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying.  The fruit is highly durable and can stay fresh for up to two weeks. “It can be preserved for more than three months in the refrigerator,” he said.

Physalis fruit is small and orange in color, similar in size, shape and structure to a small tomato.  Each plant can produce up to 2 kilos of the fruit which is rich in Vitamin C as well as Vitamin B1, B2 and B.  Deyr County with 7,500 hectares of tomato farmlands is known as the country’s biggest off-season tomato producer and produces 450,000 tons of tomato annually.
