As 14 women have so far secured seats in the 10th Parliament following the elections on Feb. 26, they can and should play an effective role in policymaking, particularly in women and family affairs, said Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Shahindokht Molaverdi on Wednesday.

“The incoming lawmakers must make rules according to the realities of the Iranian society and in keeping with modern-day families,” she told IRNA. She stressed that the unprecedented number of women (which may increase after the second round of elections, the date for which is yet to be announced) in the new Majlis provides opportunities to make optimum efforts to promote women’s rights and alleviate their situation.

“The general policies within the framework of the proposed 5-year economic, social and cultural development plan (March 2016-2021) also cater to gender equality and upholding women’s rights,” she added.
