On an average, 700 organ donations (9 per million people) are made annually in the country according to official statistics, said Dr. Ali Nobakht, head of the Iranian Organ Donation Society. “Over the past Iranian year (ends March 19), nearly 600 organ donations were made,” he said, ISNA reported. Pointing out that 5,000-6,000 people are declared brain-dead annually in the country, he said, “The rate of consent for organ donation by families was 5% in 2005, but now stands at 70%.” According to global statistics, Spain has the highest rate of organ donation in the world with 36 per million people.
