Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences signed a memorandum of understanding with the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety Ltd. (AGES) on Sunday.

The MoU was signed during Chancellor Dr. Ali Asghar Peyvandi’s visit along with a delegation to Vienna, reports ISNA.

The delegation held meetings with the agency’s Managing Director Wolfgang Hermann and other officials, and explored mutual capacities and avenues of cooperation.

AGES was founded in 2002 and functions under the Austrian federal ministries of health and agriculture, forestry, environment and water management.

The MoU seeks to develop and expand bilateral cooperation in areas of food products monitoring and safety control technologies, training researchers, holding short-term specialized programs, and conducting joint research projects with the Iranian Health Ministry’s Food Safety Research Center.

With the most sophisticated food contaminant analysis systems at its three branches across Austria, AGES screens and manages the entire food production chain in the country from farms to the food table. The visit follows a directive by Iran’s Vice Presidency of Science and Technology to boost national knowhow in areas of monitoring food safety, and prevention of contaminants with the aim of promoting food safety.

The delegation included senior officials from the food industry, Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, Food and Drug Administration, Food Safety Research Center and Comprehensive Research Laboratory at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
