A kindergarten to provide day care for children of female detainees at Ghezel Hesar prison will be operational by the end of the current Iranian year (March 19), said Esmat Sarfarazi, director general of Alborz Province Governorate’s Women and Family Affairs department.

“One of the major concerns for women inmates is taking care of their babies born during their confinement in jail. After talks with the relevant organizations, it was decided to set up the kindergarten,” she said, according to the news portal of the Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs. Ghezel Hesar is the largest state prison in Iran. As of 2011 it had about 20,000 inmates, four times its capacity, of whom 13,000 were held on drug-related charges. It is located in Karaj, 20 km northwest of Tehran.
