Health Insurance for Refugees

So far, 60,000 refugees have been covered by the Salamat (health) Insurance Scheme which provides all registered Afghan and Iraqi refugees with health insurance services similar to Iranians, said Bahman Barzegar, deputy of Health Services Development and Studies, at the Iranian Health Insurance Organization (IHIO). “We have the capacity to cover almost 850,000 refugees,” IRNA quoted him as saying. Although millions of refugees, mostly Afghans, have been repatriated over the past three decades, Iran still hosts nearly a million registered refugees. Refugees suffering from rare diseases will now benefit from the basic insurance package, including hospitalization, treatment and para-clinical services.
