About 35% of hospital beds are occupied by victims of traffic accidents, said Javad Hedayati, managing director of the statistics, security and traffic department of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization of Iran. “The number of casualties from road mishaps in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (ends March 19), reached 10,000,” he said at a press conference launching a campaign titled “Let’s Not Drive When Feeling Sleepy” in Khorasan Razavi Province, ISNA reported. Noting that the number is 2.5% less compared to last year, he said the highest number of casualties were in the first half of the year, generally related to the travel seasons. Nearly 1,000 people die in road collisions every month in the country, with men comprising 75% of the figure, and mostly in the age group 25-40.
