There are nearly 3 million infertile couples in the country at present and “each year the figure is increasing by 20%”, said Hamidreza Chubineh, managing director of the Pharmaceutical & Medical Center of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS). “Currently, the world’s average rate of infertility is 12% while the figure is 20% in our country,” IRNA quoted him as saying. In the past few years, infertility has increased because of a rise in sexually transmitted diseases and a general delay in childbearing, he said, adding that, so far of the 4,000 people who have received treatment for infertility at the center, 1,500 cases have been successful.
