Every year, around 50 medical camps are held in deprived border areas by the Basij (volunteer forces) Organization of Iran’s Medical Society (BOIMS) to provide health services for the underprivileged.

The camps offer free services to between 15,000 and 25,000 people in the vicinity. Free medicine is also given to patients but the main focus is on prevention of disease and screening by the medical teams, said Mohamad Raeiszadeh, head of BOIMS, Fars News Agency reported.

Patients requiring additional tests are referred to hospitals.  In the past five years, nearly 11 million people were covered by BOIMS. Screening tests for cancer and preventive programs for diabetes and high blood pressure were some of the measures taken.
