Dexamethasone has been the most overused drug in the country, according to a report published by the National Committee of Rational Drug Use, Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dexamethasonehas is a steroid used to treat inflammation in a number of conditions and its long-term use may result in bone loss, reports Alef news website. Figures collected from a sample of 200 million prescriptions written by general practitioners in 2010-2013, indicate increasing rate of unnecessary antibiotic prescribing as well, in particular amoxicillin and cefixime, said Dr. Fatemeh Soleymani, head of the committee. She said one in four prescriptions issued for antibiotics each year is unnecessary. “Many doctors prescribe antibiotics even when they are not sure that it is medically necessary.” The physician called for effective control over the prescription process.
