Three hospitals in Tehran were closed due to violation of standard practices in disposal of hospital waste, said Mohammad Hossein Bazgir, head of Tehran’s Department of Environment (DoE), warning that failure to heed to the rules will have dire consequences. The names of the hospitals have not been announced since they will be allowed to reopen after taking corrective measures in medical waste disposal. Regular monitoring of hospitals by the competent bodies is essential in ensuring hospitals’ compliance with environmental rules, Alef News Agency quoted him as saying. Disposal of hospital waste is an environmental concern, as many medical wastes are classified as infectious or bio-hazardous.
