The first National Conference on Primary Education opened in Birjand, capital of South Khorasan Province in eastern Iran, on Saturday.

Five hundred researchers and scholars are attending the two-day meeting at Birjand Payam-e-Noor University, Mehr News Agency reported.

Honoring Dr.  holamhossein Shokoohi, the first minister of education after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, was part of the event.

Shokoohi, 89, was born in Birjand. Holding a PhD in educational science from Switzerland, he has been working in the academic field for over 60 years, and is thus known as the ‘father of educational science in Iran’. “Of more than 1,700 articles received by the secretariat, the best 100 articles will be selected,” said Abbas Lamei, director-general of the provincial education department. Primary education has been given importance by the government, he said, and hoped that such gatherings would have a positive impact on the development of primary education in the province and nationwide.
