Temporary Marriages

Two temporary marriages are registered for every permanent marriage in the country, said Shirin Ahmadnia, director of the Social Vulnerability Prevention Office at the State Welfare Organization.

“Iran has experienced a change in social trends over the past decade and we see married couples reluctant to have children, tendency for many to stay single, as well as temporary marriages,” she said, ISNA reported.

There are 13 million individuals of marriageable age in Iran, most of whom are reluctant to get married.

“The phenomenon has surged due to the cultural and social situation, and those who cannot afford to get married are resorting to temporary marriages within religious and moral boundaries.”
