There are 8-10 million people in the country suffering from kidney ailments, says Seyyed Mansour Gatmiri, deputy head of the nephrology department at Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex in Tehran. “There is a mounting concern that they will soon be in need of renal transplant,” he said, IRNA reported. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney failure. Among the 100,000 kidney patients, 53,000 are dialysis patients waiting for a matching donor. Additionally, about 40% of all Iranians are overweight, and some 28% obese, which further contributes to kidney complications.
