Iran is among the world’s 10 leading nations in artificial heart transplant knowhow, said Masoud Qasemi, cardiologist and director of the Iranian Society of Atherosclerosis. “The first artificial heart transplant performed last year in Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran following extensive research has been successful,” he said at a function on the occasion of National Day of Atherosclerosis (December 18), IRNA reported. Noting that the 57-year-old patient is still under regular medical checks and observation, he said the new technology in Iran needs a great deal of research and investigation to develop further. In atherosclerosis, an artery wall in the heart thickens as a result of invasion and accumulation of white blood cells, creating a fibrofatty plaque.
