The number of transplants performed this year with the use of stem cells is  satisfying and so far eight stem cell samples from public banks and six from private banks have been successfully used in transplant surgeries, said Dr Morteza Zarrabi, head of the Royan Stem Cell Technology umbilical cord blood bank. Samples stored in public banks have been donated by families and can be used for all patients with specific diseases and disabilities, free of cost. Private bank samples are stored just for the donor family and therefore a fee is charged, IRNA quoted him as saying.
