Winter snow and blizzards in 18 provinces over the past 48 hours has disrupted normal life. Schools were closed in many provinces.

Roads connecting Tehran to the northern province of Mazandaran have been closed due to harsh weather conditions leaving several people and cars stranded in the severe cold. “Relief was provided to over 42,000 people grounded since Sunday morning,” said Nasser Charkhsaz, head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, ISNA reported.

Additionally, 26 injured people were provided emergency medical services or taken to hospitals by the rescue teams. Nearly 30,000 people were given emergency shelter, and 2,000 cars trapped in the snow were rescued.

“Aid packages containing blankets, food, and water were also distributed among those stranded on the closed roads,” Charkhsaz added. The provinces of East and West Azarbaijan, Isfahan, Ardebil, Ilam, Khuzestan, Zanjan, Semnan, Qazvin, Kordestan, Kermanshah, Gilan, Lorestan, Mazandaran, Markazi, and Hamedan have seen heavy snowfall and exceptionally low temperatures in the past week. Tehran also got its fair share of snowfall in the last 24 hours shutting down pre-schools and primary schools in several districts, especially in the northern areas of the sprawling capital. Snarling traffic hit the main junctions and freeways in the north early morning on Monday due to the heavy snow.
