The rate of HIV infections in donated blood units and blood products has decreased to nearly zero, said Dr. Sediqeh Amini, quality control deputy at Iran Blood Transfusion Organization. “Prevalence of HIV in donated blood has dropped to 0.003% at present from 0.005% in 2008 despite the fact that HIV is increasing in the society,” she said, Borna News Agency reported. Blood transfusion services are a vital part of the national health delivery system. Since 1995, all donated blood units in Iran are tested and screened for transfusion-transmissible infections such as three types of hepatitis and HIV.
