A commemoration ceremony for Hungarian Professor Ignaz Semmelweis was held during the conference on ‘Infectious Diseases in Pregnancy’ last week at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Semmelweis is recognized as the early pioneer of antiseptic procedures, who discovered that the incidence of puerperal fever could be drastically cut by the use of hand disinfection in obstetrical clinics.The busts of Semmelweis and Avicenna, Iranian polymath known for authoring the Canon of Medicine – a medical encyclopedia, were unveiled at the university, in the presence of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Iranian Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi and a number of officials from both sides, IRNA reported.
