By the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2016), 180,000 hectares of farmlands will be equipped with modern irrigation systems for which $370 million has been allocated, said Abbas Zare, project manager of the new plan for irrigation systems development. “At present, there are 8.7 million hectares of farmlands in the country of which 3.2 million hectares has been equipped with modern irrigation systems,” IRNA quoted him as saying. The government has announced that by the end of the next five-year economic development plan (2016-2021), all farmlands should be modernized to reduce water consumption and increase output.
