The 5th National Congress on Prevention and Treatment of Obesity will be held in Tehran’s Milad Hospital from December 16-18. “Obesity is a problem that is growing by the hour,” said Mohammad Hashemi, executive secretary of the event. “It has become a major health concern globally,” Borna News Agency quoted him as saying. Around 70% of adults over the age of 20 in Tehran are either obese or overweight. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis, he stressed. The event will discuss and raise awareness on a combination of factors leading to obesity including excessive food energy intake, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility.
Specialists in various fields including behavioral sciences, pediatrics, nutrition, surgery, sports, and policymakers will attend the meeting.
