Organ Donors Increase

There are 27,000 dialysis patients in Iran awaiting kidney transplants, Dr. Katayoun Najafi, head of the Health Ministry’s Transplant and Rare Diseases Office said, adding that “Organ donation by families of brain dead patients has increased significantly in recent years.” In 2001, only 5% of families of brain-dead patients would agree to organ donation. But now the figure has increased to 95% in some medical centers, IRNA quoted him as saying. In Iran, a person is declared brain dead after being certified by a five-member panel, of whom four are appointed by the Health Ministry and one by the Judiciary.
