More than 800,000 Iranians have registered for pilgrimage to the holy city of Karbala in Iraq to attend the Arba’een mourning ceremonies (Dec. 2), said Saeed Ohadi, head of Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization (IHPO). Pointing to the measures taken in preparation for the influx of Iranian pilgrims to the city, he said the number of passport control gates have been increased five-fold. Arba’een is the 40th day of Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia imam, Imam Hussein (AS). More than 1.2 million Iranians flocked to Iraq last year to perform the rituals, which is one of the biggest religious congregations in the world attended by Shias from many countries.
