Flash floods, triggered by heavy rainfall on Wednesday night killed six people in two western provinces, Ilam and Lorestan, the head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), Nasser Charkhsaz said Thursday.

"The intense water killed six people and injured several others, two of whom are in critical condition," Khabaronline quoted him as saying.

An estimated 20,000 homes and 1,000 vehicles were damaged in the two provinces while one resident was reported to be missing.

The floods also affected provinces neighboring Lorestan damaging roads, power lines and communication facilities as well as infrastructure in many districts, news outlets said.

A family of three perished in the city of Kuhdasht in Lorestan after they were trapped by the gushing water in their home.

Ilam International Airport suspended all flights while government offices and schools were shut and life came to a temporary halt in most parts of the city.

Flash floods have hit the provinces of East Azarbaijan, Ilam, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Lorestan and Khuzestan since October 28.

So far, 140 rescue and relief teams have been sent to the flood-hit cities, towns and villages in the provinces. The weatherman said the mercury will fall in several parts of the country and more rainfall will be dumped on the western regions until the weekend.
