Over 37,000 people donated blood on Tasua and Ashura (October 23, 24) during the mourning month of Muharram which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the third Shi’a imam. Over 45,000 people registered for voluntary blood donation under a scheme called ‘votive deposit of blood’, said Dr. Ali Akbar Pourfathollah, CEO of Iran Blood Transfusion Organization. The plan was in line with the World Health Organization’s message for this year that encourages voluntary blood donation, he said quoted by ISNA. The remaining volunteers will be called in by Arba’een, (December 2) the Shia Muslim religious observance of 40 days after Ashura.
