Only 8 percent of the total water resources are used for drinking purposes, while 70% of drinking water supply is wasted in the water distribution network, which is old and needs to be repaired and renewed, said Hassan Pasandideh, director general, water and soil office at the Department of Environment (DoE).

The total volume of water used in different agricultural, industrial and municipal sectors is 94 billion cubic meters, of which 40 billion cubic meters is provided through surface water and 53.5 billion cubic meters through groundwater resources.
