A parking lot in an area covering 60 hectares is under construction near Mehran border adjoining Iran and Iraq, and will be ready by Arba’een, the Shia Muslim religious observance 40 days after the Day of Ashura, (which falls on October 24 this year), in the mourning month of Muharram.

“The parking lot will hold 20,000 cars,” said Brigadier-General Mohammad Reza Mehmandar, chief of Iran Road Traffic Police, ISNA reported. The move aims to regulate traffic flow and facilitate thousands of travelers who set off by foot towards Karbala in Iraq every year during the period to visit the shrine of Imam Hussain (AS), the third Shia Imam, to commemorate his martyrdom.

This year, Arba’een falls on December 2.
