World Sight Day

World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness held globally on the second Thursday every October to focus attention on blindness and vision impairment. It is observed together with White Cane Day (October 15) in Iran. According to the Statistical Center of Iran, 0.13% of the population suffers from blindness, Mehr News Agency reported. “There are 530,000 visually impaired people in Iran who face numerous challenges on a daily basis. Their problems must be addressed and resolved,” said Ali Mahmoud-Nejad, head of the Community to Support Rights of the Disabled. Facilities including libraries, specially-built homes, study material and public areas designated for the blind and visually challenged could help alleviate their plight, he added.
