Iran’s High-Tech Laboratory Network affiliated to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, signed a contract with the South Korean HCT Company recently to develop laboratory science through mutual cooperation.

Under the agreement, calibration tests of new laboratory equipment will be undertaken. The two sides will also work together for the establishment of ISO / IEC17025 standards in their medical laboratories, said Dr. Ali Akbar Pourfathollah, head of Iran Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO), IRNA reported.

Speaking at the 3rd National Conference on Laboratory Medicine, he said currently, many of the laboratory equipment in the country is imported.

“Our clinical laboratories have made progress in offering the latest medical tests in the health sector. However, despite this progress, we have performed poorly in production of laboratory equipment,” he said.

He said, “We are not even self-sufficient in production of laboratory kits or use of sophisticated technologies.”

As per the MoU, educational workshops and programs will also be held.

Given the advancements in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases, special attention should be paid to laboratory science, he said.

Pourfathollah also pointed to the measures taken to prevent Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including developing a document to reduce premature deaths by 25% in 10 years as NCDs account for a huge financial burden on the government.
