SOD Programs for IRCS Rescue Teams

The Iranian Red Crescent Society conducted one-week specialized courses in Sudden Onset Disaster operations for its rescue teams. “The programs aimed to enhance skills and proficiency of the teams in SOD operations,” said Esmail Eskandari, project operator, ILNA reported. SODs occur with little or no warning and often cause excessive injuries far surpassing the national response capacities in both developing and developed countries. Demand for rapid trauma care is particularly critical, especially in the aftermath of earthquakes.
Nearly 72 SOD personnel were trained in rescue operations in floods and mountain disasters as well as search and rescue with canines and GPS systems. They were given certificates and the top three were awarded commendation plaques.
