Epilepsy prevalence in Iran is three times more than the European average, says Dr. Kourosh Gharagozli, head of the Iranian Epilepsy Association. “About 1.5 million people suffer from epilepsy, which is on par with regional figures, but higher than those in European countries,” he said at the launching of the drug ‘Depakine Chrono’, a medication to prevent and control headaches in epileptic patients. Noting that the disease is more common among children and older people, he said strokes, genetic factors, concussions, and excessive alcohol consumption could also trigger the condition, IRNA reported. “Medication for epilepsy are locally available and covered by Social Security Insurance,” he added.
