Iran ranks third worldwide in organ donation, said Ali Akbar Velayati, head of Maseeh Daneshvari Hospital and the Organ Transplant Support Society.
“Other nations have a longer history in organ transplant and technology development than Iran, but we have been more successful in informing and encouraging the general public to participate in the charitable effort,” he said at the 12th Celebration of Organ Transplantation on Thursday, Borna News Agency reported.
Iran is the only country in the world that has addressed the shortage of transplant organs through a legal payment system for organ donation since 1988. It is also the only country where organ trade is legal.
