Two brands of genetically modified (GM) imported cooking oil are now available in the market, said Hossein Rastegar, head of food laboratories at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Legal means for importing GM food products have been regulated. The FDA does not issue permit for import of GM raw materials as that is the Ministry of Agriculture’s responsibility. The FDA only approves food products,” IRNA quoted him as saying.

Pointing to the benefits of GM produce, he said the DNA of such products is modified to become resistant to herbicides, pests, drought and salinity. GM crops are rich in nutritional value and can help prevent potential diseases of pesticide-sprayed crops.

Other GM products are now under consideration at the FDA for import permits.
