Import of juices with high sugar content is proscribed by the Food and Drug Administration, said Masoumeh Takalo, a food safety expert at the FDA. “Importing high sugary drinks has been banned since a year and juices with higher amounts of natural fruit juice are being imported,” ISNA quoted her as saying. Packaged drinks contain added flavorings, colorings and sugars. Juices made from concentrate are usually higher in sugar, as they contain high-fructose corn syrup or other artificial sweeteners. Beverages, both imported and local are inspected at the time of entry or launching into the market. They are allowed on store shelves only after FDA approval.
