Tehran will host the largest annual international conference on diabetes on November 23 and 24 at the IRIB international conference center.

Representatives of health ministries from more than 20 countries will attend the confab, reports IRNA.

It will be held in collaboration with the ministries of health, welfare, education and foreign affairs, Institute of Endocrinology, Food and Drug Administration, Research Center of the Majlis (Parliament), Foundation for Special Diseases, Social Security Organization and Novonordisk Pars Company.

The conference aims at raising early awareness on detection of diabetes, the importance of treatment, improving its management in Iran and the Middle East and prevention of chronic diabetes. Another goal is to discuss the challenges and debate future strategies.

Head of the Foundation for Special Diseases, Fatemeh Hashemi, at a meeting stressed the role of schools in creating early awareness. She said screening and monitoring of students’ diet and physical activity throughout the school years should be taken seriously.

Hashemi called for a comprehensive document “to determine the role of each institution in preventing the disease.”

Rasoul Dinarvand, FDA head, pointed to the importance of diabetes treatment guidelines, especially insulin.

Bagher Larijani, deputy minister of health and chairman of the Institute of Endocrinology, said diabetes is the leading cause of kidney diseases hence it is crucial to promote public awareness on its complications.

Studies show that more than 5 million Iranians are diabetic and among them 90% suffer from type 2 diabetes.
