The Health Ministry plans to establish biosafety level 3 laboratories by the end of the current Iranian year (began March 21), said deputy health minister Mohammad Aghajani. “Given the spectre of bioterrorism in neighboring countries, Iran must be vigilant to potential threats,” he said in Semnan, IRNA reported. The laboratories specialize in identifying the causes and roots of unusual pathogens (disease causing agents). Biosafety level is the level of biocontainment precautions required to isolate dangerous biological agents in an enclosed laboratory facility. The levels of containment range from the lowest biosafety level 1 (BSL-1) to the highest at level 4 (BSL-4).
