An interim secretariat on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was established at the State Welfare Organization, said Hossein Nahvinejad, deputy head of rehabilitation at the SWO. “Based on Article 33 of the convention, each member state shall designate one or more focal points in governments for matters relating to the implementation of the convention and maintain, strengthen, designate or establish a framework to promote, protect and monitor its implementation,” ISNA quoted him as saying. Iran ratified the convention in 2009. As the first human rights treaty of the third millennium, the convention seeks to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. The secretariat will help facilitate services to the target group and promote their rights. The SWO and the Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs, are jointly responsible for the focal point in Iran.
