3 Doctors Honored on Avicenna Day

Avicenna’s birth anniversary (August 23) is celebrated and commemorated as the National Day of Physicians every year in Iran.

On the occasion, three eminent physicians Hassan Hekmat, Parvaneh Vosough, and Shams Shariat Torbaghan were commended for their services to the community, at a ceremony to honor doctors held at Avicenna Conference Hall at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, IRNA reported.

Health Minister Hassan Hashemi and Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani, were present.

Avicenna, a Persian polymath and jurist is one of the most celebrated thinkers and writers of the Islamic Golden Age. He has written more than 40 books on medicine.

His most famous work is Canon of Medicine – a medical encyclopedia which became a standard medical text at many medieval universities and remained in use as late as 1650. In 1973, Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine was reprinted in New York.
