Muhammad is the most popular baby name in the UK - as is Mohammad, Mohammed and other variations of the same name, the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. A report released by ONS on Monday said the official figures for England and Wales show that the name Oliver was at number one with 6,649 counts, reports IRNA.
Muhammad with 3,588 counts, ranked 14, Mohammed with 2,536 counts (27) and Mohammad with 1,116 counts (56), but the combined total was 7,240. Research by the Baby Centre showed that the combined variation in spelling put the name at the top of the list of boys’ names in 2014. The variations included Mohamad, Mohamed, Mohammad, Mohammed, Muhamad, Muhamed, Muhammad, Muhammed, Muhammet and many more. The name of the prophet of Islam means “praiseworthy” and is thought to be one of the most popular names worldwide.
