The Health Ministry is creating safe spaces for women to breastfeed their infants in public areas such as bus terminals and parks to encourage the practice, said Hamed Barakati, head of Children’s Health Office at the Health Ministry. “In the western and southern bus terminals in Tehran such facilities exist but the ministry is taking action for more such spaces in public areas,” he was quoted by IRNA as saying. The rate of breastfeeding for infants up to six months is 53.1% in the country, well above the global 35%. A workgroup to support working mothers was formed at the ministry to encourage policies in breastfeeding, he added.
