The number of Iranians with diabetes will reach nine million by 2030, says Alireza Esteghamati, endocrinology and metabolism specialist.
“Iran will have the second highest number of diabetics in the Middle East and North Africa region by 2030,” he said, at the second international conference on ‘Diabetes and Its Prevalence in Iran,’ held in Tehran.
Diabetes is a full-blown epidemic in India, China followed by countries in the Persian Gulf. India with over 63 million diabetic patients is next only to China (more than 92 million).
Esteghamati called for more educational workshops and seminars to raise public awareness on the disease and help reduce its incidence, reports IRNA.
