A national web portal, “leisure-time activities for youth” was unveiled in Shahrekord, capital of Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Province, at a function recently.

The portal seeks to organize leisure time of the youth through various programs, including affordable tourism. Nearly 350 places of touristic interest have been identified across the country. The project will be implemented with the cooperation of Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICCHTO) and local municipalities.

The function was attended by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mahmoud Goudarzi, head of the Department of Environment Masoumeh Ebtekar, and head of the State Welfare Organization, Anoushiravan Mohseni Bandpei.

An exclusive bank for the youth will soon be established (by late August) and they will be provided insurance, said Mohammadreza Rostami, deputy of youth affairs at the ministry, Mehr News Agency reports.

Appropriate leisure activities for youth will help fight social ills such as drug abuse, juvenile delinquency and other deviant behavior.

While leisure-time programs can contribute greatly to the development of the physical, intellectual and emotional potential of young people, the activities should be designed with due care so as not to exclude the youth from participating in other aspects of social life.

“New approaches to deal with youth problems will be adopted,” Rostami said, adding that cognitive, psychological and physical development of young people is linked directly to their leisure-time activities and could be enriched through suitable programs.

Other plans to harness free time of youth include promoting participation of state and private sector as well as international cooperation in youth-related issues.

 Youth NGOs

Increasing the number of NGOs for youngsters from 500 to 5,000, creating jobs, increasing devolution of affairs to the youth at provincial level and encouraging friendship among the youth at the global level, are also on the agenda.

Rostami said the employment rate of young people can increase through professional empowerment of young people in virtual business, banks and the insurance sector.

In the cultural context, different TV channels will be devoted for youth affairs under the supervision of the state broadcaster, IRIB. Social networks on the subject of marriage, family and training programs will also be established. The media should be encouraged to promote youth understanding and awareness of all aspects of social integration, he added.

At the international level, special programs will be launched to include regular meetings for ethnic minorities.
