The first Eustachian tuboplasty was carried out successfully on two patients in Amir Alam Hospital recently, said Dr. Mansour Motesadi specialist on Eustachian tube surgery.
A center for research in ear, nose and throat (ENT) for 70 years, the hospital is affiliated to the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, IRNA reported
The function of the Eustachian tube is to aerate the middle ear system.
Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) causes hearing complications and is common among people in the third world. Untreated, it leads to various secondary middle ear diseases where most surgical and medical interventions are ineffective, ultimately leading to hearing impairment or loss.
In spite of the advances in science and technology on diagnosis and treatment of ear diseases, for a long time there was lack of proper knowledge about ETD treatment.
In the past two years, endoscopic techniques helped in treating ETD by which specialists could improve the performance of the Eustachian tube without making incisions.
