Myopia (or nearsightedness) is on the rise among Iranians due to long hours of online gaming and use of chat apps on smart phones, said Ali Mirzajani, head of the Iranian Society of Optometry. “Such apps pressure the internal eye muscles and generate nearsightedness in people who are not predisposed to the ailment,” he said, at the 18th National Optometry Congress, reports ISNA.

Proper eye care is necessary to prevent straining of the eye muscles while using electronic gadgets.

“The popular ‘20-20-20 rule’ recommends focus of the eyes on an object 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, and to stop working every two hours to prevent digital strain.”
