The program to train family physicians under the Health Reform Plan launched in May 2014 was assessed recently at a joint meeting between Amanda Howe, president of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) and Bagher Larijani, educational deputy at the Health Ministry.

Howe stressed the importance of educating family physicians under the Health Reform Plan. “The fundamental strategy to reform health across the country is to revamp medical curriculum to include skill-based training for family physicians,” she stressed.

She hoped the health reforms would pave the way to expand training for family doctors in Iran.

In the past year, the Health Ministry has paid special attention to train family physicians under the public health program and general practitioners in the field of family medicine.

However, the field of study in family medicine will be launched as a specialized course for GPs who wish to become family physicians, reports IRNA.

“Hospitals and clinics should lay the proper groundwork to train specialized family physicians under a proper plan that enhances quality of education while being continuously evaluated and reviewed,” Larijani said.

The Health Reform Plan outlined actions to be taken by the educational deputy in family medicine as a field of study in line with transforming medical education across the country.
