The number of female-headed households (FHH) was 1.2 million in 1996. The figure has increased to 2.5 million in 2015, said Anoushiravan Mohseni Bandpei, head of the Social Security Organization, Khabaronline reported. “Currently we are studying nine provinces with the highest rate of divorce to find ways to reduce social harm,” he said, adding that Alborz, Khorasan Razavi and Kermanshah provinces have the highest divorce rates.  Divorce fosters an increase in female-headed households in the country. Such households are more vulnerable to poverty and its consequences than male-headed households.
