More than 1,000 people have drowned in the Caspian Sea in the past six years, said Ali Abbasi, director general of Mazandaran’s Forensic Medicine. The number of deaths due to drowning in the past year (ended March 20) was 98, a significant decline compared to the previous year which saw 224 deaths, Mehr News Agency quoted him as saying.  Increasing the number of safe spots for swimmers as well as the number of lifeguards has reduced deaths by drowning in the sea, he added.  Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water in the world and is variously classed as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledged sea.
