Iran is the only producer of Penicillin G in the Middle East thanks to the efforts of specialists at the Shifa Pharmed Industrial Group, said its managing director, Ali Sharif Azam, adding that production of the antibiotic had reduced dependence on imported drugs.
Penicillin G is among the most widely used antibiotics in the world, IRNA quoted him as saying.
He said Iran is now the only producer of Penicillin G in the Middle East and that production of the antibiotic indigenously will help save foreign exchange.
Pointing to the importance of antibiotics in medical technology, he said painstaking efforts in the past two years by domestic experts and local knowledge led to the operation of the production line of Penicillin G.
China and India are the only producers of antibiotic raw materials in the world, and Iran by gaining access to technical knowledge for the production of the substances has now become self-sufficient, he said. Penicillin G is among the top consumed antibiotic groups in the world.
The group started its activities in Savejbolagh region of Alborz Province in 1996-97 with the aim of producing 300 tons of different antibiotics annually. Savejbolagh is 35 km west of Karaj, the capital of Alborz Province.
