The recent heatwave has destroyed wheat and barley fields in Zanjan Province causing $11 million in damage, said Akbar Keramati, deputy of the provincial Plant Production Organization of the Agricultural Jihad Ministry. The damage is more visible in dry-lands which make up 60% of the crops under cultivation in the province, IRNA quoted him as saying. Agriculture is the principal occupation in the province and crops include rice, corn, oilseeds, fruits and potatoes. Zanjan is also famous for its seedless grapes.
