Iran performs one-third of organ transplants in the Middle East, said Dr. Gholam Hossein Naderi, head of the Department of Kidney Transplantation at Tehran’s Dr. Shariati Hospital. “So far, 34,000 patients in the subdivisions of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and 2,100 in Dr. Shariati Hospital have undergone organ transplant operations,” he said, IRNA reported. Of the latter number, 400 of the organs were donated by brain-dead patients. He also said impressive progress had been made in organ transplant of “beating heart cadavers,” which is crucial to patients with kidney, liver or heart failures.
